Founder's Story
As a seasoned coach and founder of Lead Outside the Lines, I am delighted you have found us! With 20+ years as a Chief Marketing Officer, Chief Experience Officer, and Chief Executive Officer across private, public, and non-profit sectors, and serving as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, I have experienced the ups and downs of the leadership journey.
Like many high-performers and visionary leaders, I poured my heart and soul into my career, yet no matter how much I did, I constantly felt the need to “do” more and push harder, which left me depleted and exhausted. The hustle and grind...finally caught up to me.
Within the span of four years, I lost my son to a still-birth, gave birth to my beautiful daughter, had a cancerous tumor removed that would have killed me within 10 years had they not found it, endured a divorce with grace and dignity, and watched my amazingly strong mother beat breast cancer. All of this happened while I juggled being a new mom with a demanding career, while also serving in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, pursuing my master’s degree in Leadership and Management, and helping my (now) ex-husband build and run a successful real estate training company we started together a few years earlier. I almost did NOT do the screening that found the tumor because I had too much to do to go to another doctor's appointment! Thankfully I did go, or else I would not be here now to share with others what I've learned.
My constant "doing" was slowly killing me and suffocating my creativity and innovative insights. I was leading others while running myself into the ground. The message I was sending was that being "a good leader" meant always being available, constantly doing, sacrificing, and hustling to the point of burnout. That had to change. Through therapy, coaching, and a lot of introspection, I discovered that who I was “being” had more to do with my energy drain and stress than what I was “doing” (or avoiding in some cases). I started to recognize that other leaders had similar struggles which also had negative impacts on their performance, health, and relationships.
With just a few small shifts, I began to lead myself and others from a place of courageous authenticity, meaningful connection, and honest communication (even during hard conversations). At the same time, my energy, joy, and fulfillment skyrocketed. With this new leadership approach, I helped create Fast Company's #16 Best Workplaces for Innovators in 2020. We energized a workforce that acted on big ideas and dramatically changed the way government and small businesses work together. I remarried and found more peace and genuine love in my relationships than I thought possible. I became a better leader, spouse, friend, and parent.
When you are “being” your most courageously authentic self, you will “do” the things to lead a courageously authentic life and you will “have” the capacity to create greater impact in the world and influence those around you. This is what it means to “Lead Outside the Lines”.
